Focal Points 2018 Module: Tumors of the Ocular Adnexa, a Histopathologic Primer

Focal Points 2018 Module: Tumors of the Ocular Adnexa, a Histopathologic Primer

The use of immunohistochemistry (IHC) has expanded the diagnostic abilities of surgical pathology. IHC allows for the identification and localization of antigens within tissue.

This Focal Points module serves as a histopathologic and immunohistochemistry primer for ophthalmologists. Basic concepts of histopathology for the nonpathologist related to neoplasms of the ocular adnexa (orbit, conjunctiva, eyelids and lacrimal gland) are discussed and select IHC studies are examined.

Complete this module to:

  • Explain how names of neoplasms are derived and how this terminology relates to classification.
  • Describe the features of cellular differentiation as they apply to histologic grading of tumors.
  • Discuss how ancillary studies with immunohistochemistry can increase diagnostic precision and diagnostic certainty.
  • Recognize the role that immunohistochemistry studies have in critical decision making in the classification of tumors of the ocular adnexa.
