Endophthalmitis is defined as inflammation of the internal structures of the eye, and can be infectious or noninfectious. This module limits the discussion to infectious postoperative endophthalmitis. Although an uncommon occurrence, endophthalmitis continues to be a source of considerable ocular morbidity. As with most medical conditions, the best strategy is prevention and early recognition. The Endophthalmitis Vitrectomy Study (EVS) remains the cornerstone in the management of postoperative endophthalmitis with many of its guidelines standing the test of time.

Upon completion of this Focal Points module, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the different types of postoperative endophthalmitis and their prognostic implications.
  • Initiate appropriate and effective treatment.
  • Implement effective measures to prevent postsurgical endophthalmitis.

Focal Points issues are practical, hands-on discussions of the clinical challenges you face daily. Each issue delivers high-quality, trusted ophthalmic information written and reviewed by leading experts.
