Chronic conjunctivitis is one of the most common reasons for referral to corneal and external disease specialists. While the diseases that fall in this category often do not seriously affect vision or cause serious morbidity, the chronicity of symptoms is frustrating to the patient and treating physician. Many of these diseases do not respond to commonly used topical antibiotics or steroids, artificial tears and other nonspecific treatments.

Precise diagnosis of chronic conjunctivitis is often difficult, yet critical to determine the most effective treatment. In this two-part Focal Points module, George A. Stern, MD, presents an algorithmic system that will lead to a specific diagnosis in at least 95% of cases.
