Keratoconus is a progressive disorder, usually worsening through the fourth decade of life. The traditional treatment of keratoconus has primarily focused on methods of visual rehabilitation. In the future, controlling the progression of the disease will be another important treatment goal. That would allow more patients to go through life without significant visual impairment. Ultimately, keratoconus will be treated by understanding and controlling the genetic basis of the disease.
