Ophthalmologists are often asked to evaluate a patient whose optic nerve has an unusual appearance. An anomalous optic nerve is a nerve that appears abnormal but is not diseased. The task of the ophthalmologist is to differentiate a swollen optic nerve from a benign anomalous optic nerve, or from a congenital optic nerve anomaly. By identifying key points in the history and examination, and through the judicious use of ancillary tests, the ophthalmologist can often detect an anomalous optic nerve. The purpose of this module is to assist ophthalmologists in identifying optic nerves that are merely anomalous and not indicative of a serious underlying health condition.
